Ploy

Ploypailin Moonsri — born 1999 in Bangkok, raised in Don Raet, Rattanaburi, by her grandmother. Learned English from cassette tapes at her grandmother's house. Ban Han Hee School; gold medal, English Story Telling, November 18, 2010. Eighteen kilometers to Rattanaburi High School alone by motorcycle from thirteen; passed the exam for the special program, and her family could not pay the fee. Today she teaches English in the village schools around Rattanaburi, and she interprets in every classroom a foreign teacher works in. Her story is the front page.

Ben

Ben — American, from Texas. He has taught English as a volunteer in Isan village schools for ten years, took his TEFL certificate around 2016, and holds that Isan children should learn American English. He is bad at it in public in front of forty children most weeks, and he goes back.

Why this site exists

Isan children get nine hundred to a thousand hours of English across twelve years of school and come out unable to hold a conversation. It is not the children. It is that nobody in the room produces the language. In 2018 the Education Ministry and the British Council tested about forty thousand of Thailand's English teachers; roughly three in four were at A2 — the level a learner reaches after a year or two.

None of this is a business. The sites are free and will stay free. Where a site does take a fee — a course, a listing — it funds prizes for children's competitions, and it says so on that site.

The non-profit

USAEnglish is run as a non-profit — a Thai non-profit organization, 49% owned by a US 501(c)(3). Ploy and Ben take no salary; the non-profit reimburses their actual costs and nothing more. The registration numbers will be published here as soon as they are issued, for anyone to check.
